The Spanish Civil War

June 7, 2012 | In: World War I

The Spanish Civil war started on the 17th of July, 1936 and ended on the 1st of April 1939. It was a conflict in which the nationalist forces, under the command of Francisco Franco, battled with the Republican or Legalist forces. These forces included anticlerical liberals, socialists, communists, anarchists and autonomists, all gathered under The Second Spanish Republic. Eventually, Francesco Franco won the battle. The republican gained whole support of the Soviet Union and of Mexico. The nationalists were backed up by Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and neighboring Portugal. The war sky rocketed all tensions from before the Second World War, mainly because it was exactly like Soviet- Fascist confrontation. When I say that, I refer exactly to the fact that the Second World War looked exactly like the Spanish conflagrations, meaning that the classical battlefield was out of the question. The Civil War didn’t have any straight fields, with beautiful forests through which bullets passed by. No, more than 90% of the battles were fought in cities and small buildings. Moreover, the mass-media gave this event much more attention than needed. Even Ernest Hemingway and George Orwell wrote many pages about the war. The battle remained in history mainly because the political conflicts occurred after the war ended, not to mention the atrocities committed by both sides. Both the soviet and the nationalist forces massacred civilians based on their political beliefs and after the Civil War ended, the republicans continued to be persecuted by the winning nationalists.
