The Invasion of Poland

June 1, 2012 | In: World War II

The invasion of Poland was very risky for Hitler, because he didn’t have the necessary forces and equipment for such a campaign.

Because the pact of appeasement (a pact between France, Britain and Germany that stated a non-aggression stance in case Germany attacked another country), Hitler thought that Britain and France would not attack him, even though they guaranteed to defend the Polish people. So, the invasion plan moved on.

Poland fought back, but because the immense difference between the two armies, they stood little chance. Because of the speeding events, the polish army couldn’t even assemble an army worth fighting with. By the time German tanks entered the big cities, all Poland can do was to gather lance equipped Cavalry. You could imagine what happened then.

In the mean while, from the eastern border, the Russian army marched in and crushed Poland from the other side.

Being crushed form two sides, and with a broken army, the polish soldiers had no alternative but to surrender to the Germans. It happened on the 27th of September, 10 days after the Soviets attacked.

A curious fact is that for more than 3 weeks, after Poland desperately called for help from France and Britain, nobody came, even though they were compelled to do so. Instead, France made preparations of war, but more concerning defense reasons, rather than offensive ones.

Although Britain and France, especially, thought Hitler would stop after conquering Poland, history shows us they were wrong again.

Plus, with them showing only a defensive stance, Hitler had nothing to do but preparing to invade the west…
