The Apartheid

The Apartheid was a gruesome measure taken by the South African Nationalist party. It was a system based on racial segregation. The National Party ruled in North Africa for almost 50 years, 50 years through which the rights of the black majority were curtailed and white supremacy was maintained. Racial segregation began in colonial times under Dutch and British rule. But never before, such laws existed in South Africa.

There were 4 racial groups depicted: native, white, colored and asian. Besides that, even residential areas were separated, many times using force. By 1970, not even one black person remained in the political public life. Few years after that, African citizenship was taken from many native Africans. Of course, even the educational system was segregated, along with medical care, private beaches and the majority of public services. As you expected, black people were provided with inferior services compared with the whites.

The apartheid system had many followers, but much more opposed it. Since it began, in 1948, many internal resistance and civil wars occurred. Most of the leaders of anti-apartheid groups were incarcerated, including Nelson Mandela. As militant groups started to appear even more frequently, the state responded with increasing violence and even sponsored hate-crimes.

The apartheid reform began in 1990, courtesy of President de Klerk. So, in 1994, South Africa saw its dream come true. Nelson Mandela, an opponent of the apartheid won the first democratic elections for President. As you can imagine, the apartheid didn’t stop in 1994. Remains of it can still be traced even to this day and hate-crimes still occur on major city streets.
