Hip-Hop History

June 19, 2012 | In: Music History

Hip hop is both a cultural movement as well as a music genre. It started to grow in the American suburbs in the early 70s which gave us old school rap. Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash were two of those who created music especially for the suburb parties and for those who wanted to put music to their words. And so, the MCs appeared.

The Old School era ends when Run DMC releases the album “Raising Hell” which had an immense success and thus starting the golden age of hip hop.

The Golden Age (1986-1993) started with Run DMC’s album and ended because of the G-funk genre. This period had its headquarters in NY City, where the only hip hop record label existed, Def Jam Records. The golden age came with many subgenres, including Rapcore(Run DMC & Aerosmith’s Walk this way or the Beastie Boys album “License to ill”, full of Slayer, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin melodic parts).

The Latin Rap also had many fans, bands like The Mean Machine, Big Gun or Cypress Hill gathering whole stadiums at their concerts.

In 1987, rap music started to manifest against the Government, giving birth to a subgenre, the Militant Rap. Public Enemy was the first band to sing about the social problems of the US. After him, Dj Jazzy or Will Smith released songs with the same theme.

After Hardcore Rap and the Bling Bling era, marked by singers like Snoop Dog, Jay-Z, Tupac Shakur, P-Diddy, Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre and many others, Modern Rap came with one of the biggest rappers ever: Eminem.

Although through the rap industry many come and go, no one can say that hip hop didn’t change both music, and the world.
